Paper Bridges is a project initiated by 3 Australian artists who lived in Japan between 1999 and 2003. A sculptor, a photographer, and a networked-object artist, each Australian approached a Japanese artist who worked with similar media and concerns to develop and produce this touring exhibition.

The result is a visual dialogue between artists and cultures in the Asia Pacific region. The exhibition explores how a cross-cultural flow may effect a recognition of similarities and differences between two seemingly distinct positions. As the works reflect and absorb each other in the gallery, they construct an interconnecting space that becomes, in itself, a new form or place. The metaphor of a paper bridge is an apt title for this grouping of sculpture, photography and networked objects, and the fragile flow of information them.

Paper Bridges is an exhibition that abounds with metaphor, poetry and symbolism – and highlights the fragility of such ephemeral ideas in a world besieged by consumerism and commodification.
